I cleaned out a shed in my back yard and the only two things that I couldn't put back was the trailer for my lawn tractor and my yard roller. Made of wood, the trailer could not stay outside. Because I have a stack of old pallets I decided to build a cover to store the trailer and roller.

I figured I would attach it to the back of our shed. I didn't want to buy plywood because, simply, it costs too much. I already had the pressure treated posts and treated 2x4s so, I had all the materials that I needed. And not wanting to buy shingles or roll roofing and, since it would be at the rear of the property, I figured a tarp would be a good cover. I have a lot of tarps. So, this project cost me nothing to build. All I needed was decent weather. October 17, 2024 was the first day that it was warm enough to work outside in about a week. So, I got started.

First, I got the tools ready. Since the pallets are hard wood, I decided to use the nail gun instead of a hammer.

The first step was to build the framing.

Next, the roof joists are added.

The first pallet is nailed down.

Then, the second pallets is added.

The lower pallets had to be cut in half.

The side pallets also had to be cut to fit.

All the pallets are now nailed in place.

The tarp was then added and stapled down.

The trailer was put in.

The yard roller is then added.

The keep the triler and roller safe from theft, I added chains and padlocks.

Because I used pallets, I am able to run the chains through the slots.

The pallets are much stronger than had I used plywood.

The overhang can't be seen from the house.

It turned out pretty well. And my trailer and roller are now protected from the weather.

The lean-to is finished. At this writing, it is August 29, 2025. The overhang has been in place for 9-months. It has gone through t he winter with heavy snow at times and heavy rain and wind. It's still there. It's strong and solid and nothing bothers it. The trailer and roller are safe and has stayed dry.

I will have to change the tarp from time to time, but it should last for several years before being changed. I'm happy that I selected to build this. A lean-to such as this can be used to store yard tools, a lawn tractor or anything that needs to stay out of the weather.

If you decide to build one, pallets can be bought cheaply from a manufacturing company or, sometimes, there may be a pallet dealer close to you. Use pressure treated lumber for the posts and framing. Get a decent tarp or you can cover it with roll roofing or tar paper and shingles. Also, tin roofing sheets can be used. Get a strong chain and good padlocks. Good luck!
